3 Reasons Not to Worry about Online Speech Therapy for your Parents

Updated: Apr 18, 2019

I just got off the phone with a lovely person looking to help their mom. I couldn't help but share the insight I received.

I truly believe everything happens for a reason. I don't know if I'm going to be able to see their mom but I do know that I was supposed to hear what they said.

As we were talking about our programs, they shared three concerns that ended in a positive light.

1. My mom needs a caregiver to help her because she doesn't move well. I'm not sure she can do speech therapy through a computer.

"The beauty of caregivers is that they can set up the computer, login, position the camera, and make sure your mom's comfortable", I said.

Another great thing is that the caregiver can be an asset to her therapy by becoming an active participant in the session.

The caregiver learns the lessons so that she can follow through with home exercise programs in between sessions.

This leads to a wonderful team of people who are assisting, motivating, and caring for your mom's optimal communication skills. Ultimately, everyone is on the same page.

2. "What if she just stares at you? Sometimes she does that... "

My response, "We are here to support your mom." If she's not feeling it... then we will try to motivate her another way. We will find what works for her.

If we have to discontinue the session, then we discontinue and we reschedule but that is always our last resort because we want your mom to feel comfortable, safe, and cared for.

Trial therapy programs are sometimes recommended to see if your loved one will benefit from services. They usually last around 2 weeks. At the end of two weeks, we will reassess and discuss recommendations with the family so you can make informed choices about your loved one's care.

This person's response... I like that you answer your phone and you provide real feedback and I feel like that's what we are going to get from Best Speech Therapy, PLLC.

3. "I just don't know if she can handle transport to a local center. She gets so exhausted just from getting in chair, in the van, out of the van, etc.

I have great news! There is no transport with online speech therapy. Therefore, she's not going to be tired from travel to a therapy session prior to starting our session. She'll be ready to get started without having to deal with transport issues. She'll be in a familiar environment in her own home where she feels safe and comfortable.

I like that you guys are flexible and convenient. Best Speech Therapy, PLLC may be the place we are looking for to help my mom. - person's response.
